Comeback Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in 882 Days
Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 titles have been won on hardcourt
A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his initial championship for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition final.
The Russian, a former world number one, has experienced a difficult season, achieving just a single victory at the major tournaments and experiencing a meltdown at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his serve in particular - caused him exiting of the top ten and finally separating with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.
Currently training with his coach and his other coach, the tennis star has steadily advanced in the last few weeks - culminating in a tightly fought competitive win over challenger Corentin Moutet.
This represents his first title following the Rome competition and maiden on a hard court from March of the previous year.
Victory also indicates the Russian has won twenty-one championships at 21 distinct tournaments.
"It's the first time I am participating in a event with my children together, so to win a trophy is really nice," stated world number 14 the champion.
"This championship is in dedication of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I got when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."
The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, comprising in Halle previously this season.
The player's retrieving play style and frequent outbursts on court had caused commentators to question if his capacity to compete at the top level was concluded.
However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, striving to advance forward and perform aggressively, supported by an improved serve.
The champion came back from a break down in the first set against the tricky opponent, winning four of the concluding five games to take the lead.
Both players swapped breaks in the second set before Moutet, striving for his first professional championship, took control to push for a final set.
The opponent saved four initial chances in a competitive final set before the champion broke to fifteen to secure the win.
Suitably, Medvedev clinched the win with a point at the net area, with the Frenchman failing to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
